So, what's everybody reading? | ||
|
I'm up to my eyeballs in research, so there's very little time for "reading for pleasure."

Okay, it was far too nice this weekend to sit inside and do research, so my iced tea and I sat on the back patio and I started reading John Saul's
"The Blackstone Chronicles." It's a compilation of six serial novels in one volume. In the town of Blackstone, the Asylum is finally being
torn-down. But from its recesses, a dark figure takes odd objects and leaves them with the town's leading figures. The objects have the power to unleash
extraordinary evil. The book is only 412 pages long, so you can see that the individual novels aren't very long. Overall, it's a mixed bag.

I read The Blackstone Chronicles man years ago and, for the most part, I quite liked it.
Right now I have 3 on the go: The horror book is 999, edited by Al Sarrantonio anf feature authors like Joyce Carol Oats, Gene Wolfe, Stephen King, F. Paul Wilson and Thomas Ligotti. So far, I've enjoyed most of the stories but I'm far from half-done. I also have a non-fiction book, A Green History of the World by Clive Ponting which discusses how, throughout history, civilizations have caused their own downfall through exploiting natural resources. And, my epic read is The Book of Kings by James Thackara. It follows 4 university students in Paris and examins how their lives parallel Germany's descent into Nazism. At 773 pages, it's one that will take me quite some time to finish. But so far, so good. *Disclaimer: Not responsible for lost, stolen, or eaten body parts*

My main objection at this point, Queen, is the choppiness of the story. I guess if I'd read it as a serial, I wouldn't feel this way. But the
characters are quite good and they stay with you so that you don't forget who they are from one part to the next. Still, the more I read of it, the more I
like it.

I just started The Best of Cemetery Dance, volume 1.
Another anthology that's been sitting on my TBR shelves for several years. So I thought it was about time I got around to reading it. *Disclaimer: Not responsible for lost, stolen, or eaten body parts*

I have recently bought a horror book: Heart Shaped Box.
As I am currently reading Snow Crash (SciFi) that HSB book has to wait a little, but ... wanted to peek in here and ask if anyone here has maybe read it yet? |

I read Heart-Shaped Box, Mags.
There is a post about it here but I can't remember if I added spoilers. I liked the story but, being a fan of heavy metal myself, I did have problems with the character's portrayal. *Disclaimer: Not responsible for lost, stolen, or eaten body parts*

I bumped the topic up, if you want to take a look, Mags.
I don't think anything there is a spoiler. *Disclaimer: Not responsible for lost, stolen, or eaten body parts*

I'm just about to finish Cabal by Clive Barker. One of his earlier novels, it's about a man who thinks
he's a murderer and eventually gets turned into Nightbreed, a race of undead who dwell in the mysterious world,Midian. It's also about the woman who
loves him. Some of you may be familar with the movie, Nightbreed, which is based on this book.

A dunno if its strictly belongs here but American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis has certainly been horrifying me recently!

I'm reading "Lisey's Story" by Stephen King. I'm about 9/10ths finished and there has been barely a thing I've liked about it.
Mercifully, it's almost over and I'll get back to a master fantasist, Michael Chabon.

The House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewsk. So far the jury is out.

I started Tad Williams' Otherland series so I've been trying to get through that.
I like it so far. It's got kind of a sci-fi/fantasy blend with enough weird surrealism to keep me interested. *Disclaimer: Not responsible for lost, stolen, or eaten body parts*

Still working on Otherland but I also started 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill.
The couple of stories I've read so far were good. But they don't seem to have the "surprises" the critics claim there are. The endings have been predictable thus far. *Disclaimer: Not responsible for lost, stolen, or eaten body parts*

Queen,
Pick up either/both "Moon on the Water" and/or "The Stranger" by Mort Castle. They are both exceptional and you can get them signed soon. |

Oooh! Completely forgot at the time, but I recently read a really good horror book: Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist. Set in a provincial Swedish
town in the 1980s, it's about bullied outsider Oscar meeting up with a strange child who's moved into the same flats and turns out to be a vampire.
It's something quite different to a lot of the other vampire books I've read, and is a delightful antidote to the saccharine Twilight. Eli really is a
monster, and of a very complex sort. It's also been made into a great film.

I'd like to get a hold of that book or movie. While at the WHC I had dinner with some Canadian film makers and they were talking about how good the film
was.
I've just finished reading Strange Seed by T.M. Wright and The Vampire of Ropraz by Jacques Chessex. The latter is based on a real case in Swiss history. It's not a horror story but the reactions of the villagers and the treatment of the accused is quite disturbing. *Disclaimer: Not responsible for lost, stolen, or eaten body parts*

I finally finished Otherland, volume I
Now, in terms of horror, I'll finish up 20th Century Ghosts. Then I can move on to a new horror book. *Disclaimer: Not responsible for lost, stolen, or eaten body parts*

I just started "Pressure" by Jeff Strand. I was going to read "Sacrifice" by John Everson, until I realized it was a sequel ot his first
novel. Being weird that way, I will wait until I get the first part and read it before going back to it.
