A few people in the thread I started about having conversation with literary characters mentioned that they could come up with authors more easily.

So, here it is; a thread to do so. State your authors/authoresses, and tell us why!

I actually have my own answer for this. I think I'd like to have conversation with Elizabeth Crane. Why? Because, her writing style is very similar to how I think and speak! That could be a good thing...or a decidedly horrible thing - for us to try to have a conversation together.

This is a tough one for me. I'd hate to have my misperceptions outed and the more noble attributes I thought the author had exposed for his or her everyday foibles.

I'd love to have dinner and drinks with Ogden Nash and Mark Twain. I think there would be lively, witty and intelligent conversation at that table. I do think I will also invite Fannie Flagg to even us out - I cannot imagine a more enjoyable evening.

Hey, Gaye stole my answer...I was going to say Mark Twain! He was such a witty writer that I'm sure he must've been just as witty in real life. So I think it would be a very entertaining evening. It might also be interesting to have dinner with Agatha Christie and find out how she got started with all her mysteries and where she got her ideas from. I also love good western writers and wouldn't mind having dinner with Louis L'Amour and Larry McMurtry. McMurtry wrote the Lonesome Dove novels and some other westerns such as Anything For Billy and Buffalo Girls...and, of course, he wrote other non-western novels as well.

Me neither, but my mum gave me the book and at first I didn't like it, but I kept on reading and it made quite an impact!

Ok, I'll go for entertainment value here, with three current writers and one dead one, all crime fiction authors - and all Scots! How did that happen?

Ian Rankin - I had a beer with him years ago and he was a top bloke
Stuart MacBride - Aberdeen crime writer, very funny, even his website makes me laugh aloud
Josephine Tey (Elizabeth McKinnon) - some quite funny and racy elements in her books, particularly in comparison to Dame Agatha.
James McCall Smith - another lovely, lovely man and quite funny too.

Maybe James Lee Burke could pop in and cook up a barbecue for us. And maybe Stieg Larsson too, just to balance things a little and not leave Elizabeth McKinnon as the sole dead author.

If we can have both living and dead authors, I think I'd choose Agatha Christie and J.K. Rowling; they are both British women and are two of the bestselling authors of all time.

I would've loved to have had dinner with Robert Jordan. At the top of my list right now would probably be Lisa See. Although all of her books are about China, they are in several different genres. Interesting.

I took my time to decide on this one, but now I know who - Thomas Mann (1875-1955). Although my chances are not great that it would be possible as he died some time ago. Over the last few years I started reading up on the German authors, in original German. My knowledge of the language has progressed so much over the last 42 years in Switzerland that it makes no difference any more when I read original German text from a German author. I must say he is one of the most fascinating figures in literature that I have found up to now. His brother Heinrich was also a well known author, as well as three of his children Eika, Klaus and Golo (also a historian). I have read Buddenbrooks and am now reading Der Zauberberg (The magic mountain): He lived in the States during the second world war and afterwards spent his remaining years in Kilchberg near Zürich in Switzerland where he is buried along with his wife.
