How do you deal with power outages? Have they ever really inconvenienced you?

Well, I live in Hurricane Central here in FL. They can be bothersome. I'm just enough outside the city limits that they can sometimes take a couple days to
get out to us when the power goes out. Unfortunately, it seems every time it rains - we have a minor loss of power. It has been raining quite a bit the last
couple days - but thankfully, the lights are still on *knocks on wood* I'm working on an assignment tonight. I feel so lazy, I'm finding every reason
in the book to keep from working on it. It's due at 3am lol

I am just so thankful that we have power. Those poor people in parts of Dallas. And it's so hot & humid. The Ranger game was delayed tonight because of
a power outage. You gotta know that the concessions did alot of extra business in that 90 min. Lots of beer flowing I would presume.

I used to love power outages (short ones as long as it wasn't cold.).
What a great time for lighting the candles, popping the batteries in the radio, puttering around the house and if it lasted long enough, reading a book. Great time for slowing down and taking it all in, just being. Even better if a thunderstorm was happening-take in a glorious storm with all the thunder and lightning. Now, not so much. With the computer and audio books, I'm much more dependent on electricity. |

I know the feeling sublimosa...last power outage we had...well...we all ended up sitting around looking at each other. No one wanted to play monopoly by
candlelight and since it interrupted two game stations and computer time...the family wasn't exactly ecstatic about it.

For the most part, power outages haven't been too much of a problem. I don't know if there is a direct correlation, but ~~ Because I'm one who
calls the power company right away, it seems as if our area's problems are resolved rather quickly. Possibly first call, first serve... During the 12-day
outage last September, we only suffered for 9 hours. As our area is definitely not a priority area, I presume we were either in an "easy to fix" area
OR my immediate telephone call had a truck dispatched before they power company truly discovered just how extensive the outage was. Dayton Power and Light had
over 700,000 customers without service. That's quite a lot for a town of Dayton's size.
During the day, we'll usually try to keep on doing what we'd planned. Outages in the evening can be so much more fun. The kids get all excited. We will sit and talk or play games. Sometimes, we'll go out driving to see how far the outage has spread.

Well, up until last winter I'd have said they were kind of exciting - but with the ice damage and the fact they were not giving any promises as to when it
would come back, it became very tedious. Although, you really learn to appreciate every aspect of running electricity and hot water and an indoor oven after
about 38 hours.

We've had a number of brownouts over the past few years, particularly under the privatised system. There's candles and matches in strategic possies
around the house, as well as a couple of torches and it doesn't hurt that I've got some really good headlamps in my caving gear.
There were a lot of outtages over the most recent summer, during our hottest recorded temperatures in years, including our hottest day ever. They were inconvenient for a lot of people, including some colleagues with young families who were without power for the best part of a week. We were lucky where we were, as our local outtages didn't last for longer than about 12 hours at a time. We have no airconditioning at home, so it was just a matter of being careful to keep the fridge door closed. Having gas cooking and hot water didn't hurt either, not that anyone wanted a hot water shower at the time. Being summer, it was light until late and then there were torches or candles. It was also too hot to have the computer on most of the time, anyway! One Friday there was a brown out that affected a lot of the city, and shut most of our side of town down. We were told we could go home but a few of us chose to stay as the outtages were causing problems with public transport and there was sufficient residual coolness in the building that it was bearable to keep working - and much preferable to being outside in the heat. We were getting phone calls from colleagues trapped in crowded train carriages with no cooling, or colleagues still baking on platforms telling us to stay where we were - some of them even came back. It didn't hurt that one of the visiting IT people popped down to a local supermarket and got a massive box of cheap icy poles to share and the social club made the executive decision to hand out its stash of cold soft drinks from one of the unpowered fridges. (It was also the day before Black Saturday, so seemed really trivial in comparison by the time we were back at work on the Monday.) Winter would be a bit of a different prospect, I think. And so would be coping for longer than 24 hours - and often, like some of the people who live in the parts of Queensland and northern NSW that keep flooding at the moment. |

We had several minute or less long power blips the other night...it became so annoying that I just shut off my computer and went to bed.
