hyperbole for the sake of humor, although I do think there is a lot.

I enjoy romances but, like you, I don't read them as much as I used to. I also agree that immediate/overly graphic/improbable sex scenes are a turnoff.
On the the other hand, I think these just have to be enjoyed for what they are. They're genre fiction; they follow a certain formula. And, for all that many people complain that romance novels are "unrealistic" they're actually about something most people really experience; as the vast majority of human beings DO fall in love and get married. Very few people stumble across dead bodies, get abducted by aliens or experience any of the kinds of things written about in mysteries, sci-fi, etc. I also think, generally speaking, romances appeal mostly to teenage girls and women in the "under 35" category. I have no idea how old you are, but perhaps you're just outgrowing this genre. |

I think you make very good points Islandgirl. I think by the time I picked up my first romance novel, I was already too old for the genre.

I have survived my stoning (Sheep compassionately opted for a garden sprinkler instead).

I think it likely that more men have warped minds and that when we find that sort of thing from women we wonder... I know that's a narrow view point, but
it's one I've seen played out many, many times in the people I know.
I got on a romance kick back in the late 1980s. I was recently divorced and had sworn off sex for *life* and my best friend thought that was just the saddest thing she every heard. Well, Labor Day weekend rolls around, I rent videos for the kids to watch then go across the street to browse the book rack (the UBS next door was already closed for the weekend -- or maybe it was closed permanently by then, I don't remember. Anyway, I picked up Midnight Something or Something Midnight by Shirlee Busbee; liked it enough to read a few more but they were so totally formulaic that I couldn't take it for long. There was one author I discovered during that foray into romance that I still buy, although the most recent couple of books have been sitting here unread for a really long time. It's Johanna Lindsey and although her books may follow the script for historical romances, she fleshes out her secondary characters more, has somewhat stronger women, and there's alway humor in her books!

Don't know what I'm currently reading... between books for a minute. |

I read her (Lindsey) and had forgotten - I did love the fact that she added humor when so many other romance novels didn't - I also remember so very steamy
sex scenes .. "woo la la". That brings to mind Susan Elizabeth Phillips - I've laughed outloud at some of her characters and situations.
