a people's history 1492 to the present by howard zinn. great 'alternative' take on the history of the united states by the author. especially insightful on how the battle between settlers and indians was waged throughout the years.

Which would you consider his best? He's such a prolific writer; I'd love to be able to go right to the really good ones.
Paper Doll is the first Parker book I'm reading in English. I read a few of his books (all Spenser mysteries) translated to Hebrew and I am curious to know what he "sounds" like in the writer's original words. |

Don Quixote -- again!! I love this story but never seem to be able to finish it, perhaps because I get distracted by shorter books.

I've just come back from the library (and the supermarket, in case you think all I ever do is read) where I hit their wonderful sale shelf. I picked up five books (25 cents hardcover, 10 cents paper) The paperback is a large format about projects you can do with nature. I thought the girls would have fun with it.
The hardcovers are: THE WOLFEN by Whitley Strieber (first novel) DO WITH ME WHAT YOU WILL by Joyce Carol Oates THE BETWEEN by Tananarive Due (first novel) and MY WORK IS NOT YET DONE by Thomas Ligotti I'm sure you all know Oates, who is one of my favorite writers, but you may not know the others, who are primarily horror writers. And again I showed great restraint in not taking out any fiction related to the novel I'm currently working on. Believe me, when you're writing a historical piece taking place two thousand years ago with a female narrator, the temptation to peek at someone else's work is constant! |

David, I was going to say 'I can just imagine' but, on second thought, 'I can't even imagine' would really be more appropriate. I'm so glad there are people like you out there in the world willing to do the research and write the books so that I can just plop down in my brand new comfy reading chair and, um, read them!
I checked out Star Garden: a novel of Sarah Agnes Prine the other day which is the third or fourth in a series about a woman who was an early settler in the Arizona territory. I *love* books about women pioneers and sometimes get completely caught up in them. But, I've been so intent on whittling down my TBR, a New Year's resolution I've been making for each of the last three or four year, that I fear I may not actually get to this one before it's due back at the library. Thanks, Karen. As anyone who has read my writing can easily tell, I spend a great deal of time researching. It may not all show up in the book, but it's important for me to know it. Every object I've placed in any of my stories is historically accurate.
Those of you who aren't horror fans will be happy to know that my current research will not translate into a supernatural evil, but into the memoir of a woman who lived about two thousand years ago. I get very frustrated when I read a book that has insufficient or poor research. I hate seeing an object used that hadn't been invented yet. Or an expression taken from the wrong culture. I've always admired Mary Renault and James Michener for their work. They may not have been the greatest of writers, but their research was impeccable. And yes, Karen, I do the research so that you can get cozy and read without having to wonder if what I wrote was correct. Sit back and enjoy! |
