My sister Jacki lost her fight against cancer last night. Paramedics in the ambulance worked, doctors worked -- but in the end her heart had just had enough and she passed away.
From the time Jacki was diagnosed, ten years ago, she refused to give in, to let cancer defeat her. She went through chemo, two transplants, and a barrage of tests; she took so many medications that I teased her about being a walking pharmacy. A normal person would have complained -- about the discomfort, the unfairness of it all. Not my sister. With dignity and strength she faced each day and did what she could to live another tomorrow. One of her friends called Jacki a hero. I couldn't agree more.
