Quote: Sorry for the delay in answering, Queen. Yes, the book is Toybox. I enjoyed most of the stories, but there were a few that I found...let's say "difficult to get through." |

In the horror/fantasy genre, Tanith Lee's Companions on the Road, as soon as I can find it. I've just mentioned it in another thread and am all geared up to read it again!
Tomorrow, in my experience, is usually the same day.

I really enjoyed The War of the Worlds, although I read it a couple of tears ago, so I don't really remember the details very well.
And now I can't wait to read Toybox. Alas! November and December were pretty busy for me, what with exams and preparing for exams, so I am still trying to get through Anna Karenina and Red Shadows. In other words, I have no other books to share with you. Hopefully I'll be able to rectify the situation by the time my holidays are over. A room without books is as a body without a soul. - Cicero |

Yup, I know what you mean - it's hard when you've got a few things queued up.
Have just finished reading Tanith Lee's Companions on the Road and it's as good as I remember it. This is my fourth or fifth re-read, and I think I first read it when I was about 11... Tomorrow, in my experience, is usually the same day.

Started reading Spawn by Shaun Hutson a couple days ago.
It's about a guy named Harold who gets released from a mental hospital, where he's spent pretty much his whole life for accidentally killing his baby brother in an fire Harold started. Harold gets a job as a hospital porter but part of his job is burning aborted fetuses. The fetuses bring back memories of his brother and Harold has a breakdown. Meanwhile, a murderer has just escaped from prison and goes on a killing spree in the same town. I just finished reading part 1 so I haven't quite made up my mind yet. So far Harold's part is the most interesting while the murderer's part is taking its time to grab me. I should finish it this weekend, though. I just started reading The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham.
Here is the synopsis: "CUCKOOS LAY EGGS IN OTHER BIRDS' NESTS The clutch that was fathered on the quiet little village of Midwich, one night in September, proved to possess a monstrous will of its own.It promised to make the human race look as dated as the dinosaur." I'm not sure yet if this is horror, but I do remember it was made into a movie, called Village Of The Damned, that was classified as horror. We all go a little MAD sometimes... |

I'd call it more sci-fi than horror, although it certainly has horror elements. I still really enjoy John Wyndham books and must re-read some this year.
Erm, not reading any horror right now as am still on a 'crime wave'. Promise to rectify that sometime soon, truly. Tomorrow, in my experience, is usually the same day.

Midwich Cuckoos just hasn't grabbed me and I've read about two-thirds of the book.
I really enjoyed The Day Of The Triffids, but this one just isn't doing anything for me. It seems to all be talk, talk, and more talk. I'm still trying to decide if I should sacrifice my time and finish it, or move on to one of the many other books waiting for me to read them. We all go a little MAD sometimes... |

If you're 2/3 through, I'd recommend you finish. It's not a very long book and I thought the ending quite good. If you really end up disliking it, you can whack me over the head with it too - promise.
I love Day of the Triffids, but my very favourite is The Kraken Wakes. Maybe Kraken would be more to your taste than Cuckoos? Oops - edited to add that Kraken has a lot of similarities to Triffids, with the earth facing a menace and a handful of doughty scientists and rag tag civilians surviving the collapse of contemporary civilisation, maintaining the norm as much as they can and somehow fighting back. Tomorrow, in my experience, is usually the same day.

Y'know, out of all the Wyndham books I've seen here in town, I've never seen Kraken, so I may have to special-order it.
As for Cuckoos, I decided I would finish it. I've only got about 20 pages left, so why not? Quote: Well, I'll mail it out to you and you'll have to whack yourself for me We all go a little MAD sometimes... |

Finished Midwich Cuckoos last night.
Even though I thought the story rather drawn-out and slow-moving, I have to admit I thought the ending pretty cool. And, like all good works of literature, I did find a rather important message: No matter how superior humans think they are, we must never forget that all epochs come to an end. We must be open to the possibility that someday, somewhere, there may arise a species even more "advanced" than humans (I use the term loosely). In fact, I'm working on creating a superior race myself right now... We all go a little MAD sometimes... |

Glad the ending sorta kinda made up for the middle. If anything, Wyndham's message in Cuckoos is even more pertinent today.
I would be reading some Garton if I could bloody well FIND some! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Tomorrow, in my experience, is usually the same day.
