I missed writing a letter for my daughter when she turned 21 but for Sean, I really wanna do this. I have a month but have been thinking about this for a long
time. Where to start?
This is your 21st birthday & it is quite a special year to celebrate. PopPop used to say 'free, white & 21' but that saying is so old and passe. We all know that the legal age is 18 these days but the legal drinking age is 21. Plus, that saying is so racial. But, of course, that was in the days of slavery. Not only will you be turning 21 but you'll be graduating from college during this year. Going out into the real world. I realize that you've been on your own for 2 1/2 yrs., but pretty soon, most legal ties will be cut from us. Health insurance, car insurance, dental insurance are some of the things that I am referring to. But, let's go back in time for awhile to see how far you've come...
The day that you were born was just so amazing!! I think that during those 2 weeks that you were late, Dad & I had not see that many first run movies in a long time!! You were welcomed into our family within hours!! What a great baby you were!! Even let your sister feed you, play with you...she was & still is her brother's little mother. Don't worry...she will not stop!! I secretly think you like being doted on!! I remember one time when I was nursing you in the rocking chair & she tried to get into my lap, I told her that she had her turn with us nursing; now it was our turn. I think there was a smile on your face telling me thank you for our special quite time by ourselves.
Then...came along your 3 other brothers. I remember how distraught you were when we told you that Scott had been a stillborn. Well, when you were 4, the phrase that we used was that he had died in my tummy. I felt so bad for you--you just cried & cried. and I didn't know what to do for you. That's one of the times that I knew you had a big heart. And you were always excited when we told you we were gonna have another baby. You would tell the whole world before I had a chance to announce the news.
Then...it was time for you to get on the yellow bus & go off to school. That was one of the hardest days of my life. But, I knew that was one of the rite of passage. I almost held you back you a year since you're a late summer baby & you'd be in the same grade as your sister, but you were just too smart for me to do that. I thought you'd be bored & we'd be doing you a disservice by doing that. So...on you went. And got the best grades. That's when I knew that I'd done the right thing by you. During your elementary years, you excelled in sports and Cub Scouts also. You loved to camp & show off your achievements. Pretty soon, it was time to receive your Arrow of Light & bridge into Boy Scouts.
You joined your Boy Scout troop & went off to middle school where you would win many more achievements. Band was always your forte.
That's it for tonight.
Structure...you always needed structure in your life just as you do now. You found that in Scouts, band & now your job at Pizza Hut. Those were/are your niches. You've found your place in the world. You always had to be doing something or you were bored & restless. And got into trouble, lol. Well...what I considered trouble anyways.
