I'm not sure when this all happened but I'm guessing it was probably around 1998 which means I've had my TV now for just about a decade. There's a story behind it, of course...
Somehow (and I'm not sure how) I found out about this newfangled DVD system. I heard the picture and sound quality were much better than plain old VHS. The quality was supposed to be even better than laserdiscs and these discs were much smaller. Not only that but they could fit a lot of extra content in them, things like photos, audio commentaries, trailers, deleted scenes, documentaries and other stuff. That's for me, I thought. So I picked up a couple of DVDs and then a DVD player. And then I found out the darn thing wouldn't work on my old floor console TV set. I needed one that had AV inputs. So it was off to an electronics store with my friend Norman. We decided to go to Sun Electronics. They weren't that far away and they were about to go out of business so we figured we could get a good deal.
Originally, I was thinking of getting a TV with a 32-inch screen. I guess I got confused because the one I chose actually had a "mere" 27-inch diagonal screen. Still, I liked it...after all, it was a Sony and I've always liked Sony's product. So I filled out the proper papers and with much effort, we fit it into the back of my car and brought it home. I don't remember if Norman noticed it then or in a follow-up visit but at one point he noticed that the frame of the TV was cracked. Perhaps it had a hairline crack we hadn't noticed before and separated later but at this point it was very obvious. Obviously, I was a bit upset...after all, I'd just bought it as a brand new set and now it seems I had been sold damaged goods. I got in touch with the salesman a couple of times and he really was no help. Finally, he told me to hang on the line and he would call his superiors in Columbus. So I waited for about 15 minutes or so and then a woman came on the line and asked who I was waiting for. I told her and she remarked "Oh, he left for the day!" That's right, he put me on hold and then walked out on me. As I said, that electronics chain went out of business and I don't know what line that salesman went into after that. Hopefully something where he gets to ask "Would you like fries with that?"
Today, about 10 years later, I still have that TV. I really had no other alternative as far as I can see. The frame is still cracked and you still notice it when it first comes on but as I tend to get interested in whatever I'm watching, I ignore it and don't notice it after a few minutes. I may get another TV one of these days...but I won't be getting it from an electronics firm going out of business!

what a cool story
