What audiobooks would you recommend? |

I love audiobooks, and I know that other folks do to. While most people just talk about books, whatever form they perfer to read them in, I'm looking
specifically for a discussion of audiobooks.
So, what audiobooks have you read and would recommend? |

A Season in Purgatory by Dominick Dunne as read by Campbell Scott. CS did a fabulous job, but unfortunately, his
version is only available in abridged format.
I also really enjoyed In Her Defense by Stephen Horn as read by James Naughton (sp?(. Also only in abridged format. The bad news here is that this guy now does the voiceovers for Sealis commercials. Ugh! But he did a nice job with the book. I love Debbie Mazer's version of Stephanie Plum. For me, she is the ultimate Stephanie, but again, her version is only abridged. Most of the audio books I read are not commercially produced, but I will add the good ones as I remember. I often feel that commercially produced audiobooks are over done/hokey in the reading. And I generally don't like the added sound effects, etc.

The Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich and read by Loreli King. She does a fantastic job.

OH, smackdown, miasmum!
I do listen to the Loreli King versions as they are the unabridged, and she does a good job, but for me, she lacks the New Jersey flavor that Debbie Mazer has... |

What genres are those books?

V, I'm not sure what genre A season in Purgatory is-it is sort of a fictionalized version of the murder of
the girl who was killed in New England with the golf club and perhaps Michael Skakiel (Kennedy cousin) is thought by many to be responsible. I didn't know
that when I read it or I probably would have avoided it like the plague, but really enjoyed it.[u][In Her Defense[u][ u]/u]
is a legal mystery with a bit of romance thorwn in. I think the Stephanie Plum novels are mystery/comedic-many refer to them as chic lit. I just find them entertaining. You are into horror, right? Does Dean Koontz *sp* count? I've listened to a few of his audio books and they are usually very well done. |

Nobody's Fool by Richard Russo and read by Ron McLarty. This was excellent.

Not so much into horror... more into science fiction, fantasy and historical fiction

Tim Curry is a fantastic reader. He read the Dune Prequels, he is brilliantly over the top and does the characters voices. I think he reads a a lot of Anne
Rice books? It might be worth checking it out.
I second the recommendation of the Harry Potter books read by Stephen Fry. Also "The Ode Less travelled". You may want/need to read the book as well depending on your learning/enjoyment style. Chris Barrie who reads the "Red Dwarf" books is also very good.

I've tried some Anne Rice books on audio. Interview with the Vampire was great, but I tried two others and just couldn't get into them.

I love listening to any Christopher Moore's book. I'm into Fool right now, read by Euan Morton. It's a take on King Lear and depending on
what type of humor you enjoy, it's hilarious. I have also listened to Bloodsucking Fiends which is the book that made me want to hear more from
Christopher Moore. I wonder if I had just read the books rather then listened to them, if I would have liked them as well?

A helpful hint for the audio book listener so you can sample the narrarator's voice before sinking the money:
try entering the title of the book or name of the author in the search box at sadsteve. There are a lot of audio excerpts there (from 2 to 7 minutes long) that can give you an idea of how it will be. There are certain readers I cannot and will not listen to no matter how much I might want to read a particular book! Also, there are some good author interviews available all in one place, too. On woot the other day, there were wonderful deals on the 80 GB Zune and I picked one up for SteveO who said he might be interested in audio books - so, Mosa,
I'm really not sure where to begin with his collection - he loves talk radio, is a all sports kind of person, somewhat of an american history buff. Where
do you think I should begin, by title/subject/ reader?

Gaye, did you have any luck?
I tried replying a few days ago and nothing posted and I've been busy since. If your hubby has a particular sports author he likes, type the name in the search box. Maybe the name of the athlete? Might come up with some interviews and podcasts too. Not sure what would happen if you typed in "basketball" -how many songs can there be with that name? = ) Same goes with the history stuff...worth a try.
