I know bookstores cannot carry every single book, but one should expect to find at least the new release books on their shelves.

So, I ventured into my local bookstore... |

to pick up the latest copy of Gregg Hurwitz's Trust No One, when I found there was no copies on the shelves. It was released on June 23rd, yet I was not
able to find a single copy. One Chapters store claimed to have three copies, but I found none on the shelves. In fact, the guy said that they had not
unloaded a lot of their shipment. A week later, I went to another bookstore and they still did not have a single copy of his book out on the shelf. This is
really getting me angry because I was really looking forward to getting a copy of one of my favorite writer's books. I got the guy to look in the boxes to
see if they were unloaded. He found a copy for me, but the experience left a bitter taste in my mouth.

I get annoyed when people in bookstores seem to know *nothing* about books!! I realize they can't know the name of every obscure author and/or series, but
it amazes me when they've never heard of, say, Agatha Christie or Harry Potter!!

Agatha Christie...wasn't she Julie Christie's mother? ROFLMAO
I remember when I tried to apply to work in a bookstore...one guy had rehearsed his answers that it was like an actor reading his lines. I talked about my favorite books and what authors who I have contacted with over the years. He got the job and I did not. |

Ian, I've had to use your line a few times. They seem to get a bit annoyed by it though.

My local bookstore has always been good about that....i have a tendency to request hard to find books...and they have always come through for me.....over the
years they have learned to dread me walking through that door....
the last book ordered was called the volunteers handbook....published by the army council of the IRA....talks about guerrilla tactics...and bomb plantings....and whatnot...very interesting. |

That must be a very good author, Aquaryan. Or they didn't order enough copies.

Sounds to me that either they didn't think this was a good author and the publisher didn't have many copies to send out. Is this a new author?

publishers and book stores are cutting back a bit. The industry used to flood the market and count unsold books as sold for stats in bestsellers lists. That
cost money when the books remained unsold. So, now they are more cautious likely on the side of ordering a nd publishing too few books. I recommend pre-orders.
You will be assured of your book that way.

Good point Rockthief, they're also only doing book signings if they can be assured of an audience.

Which explains why there are rarely any book signings. As for pre-ordering I should have done that....
