Something I have wanted to read since I have lived in Switzerland, but my German was not good enough for many years. Now I have reached my goal and I think I am reading one of the best German books I have ever read. The story of a very rich merchant family. I have seen the film, an old black and white one (in German of course) and also saw the television film on the life of Thomas Mann. The book shows the development of the family over the 19th century, their marriages, births, successes and disappointments. I am not yet finished, but that doesn't matter. It is a family epic that I am really enjoying and gives a very good impression of life of a rich family at that time. It takes place mainly in North Germany, the family living in Lübeck. If you happen to find an English translation then I can only recommend it.
